Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a way to accelerate cell renovation of the top layers of skin to achieve many different objectives. Including deep cleaning, nourishing, moisturizing, diminishing aging effects, anti-acne, depigmentation and reducing the appearance of pore size. Chemical peeling agents help to resurface the skin by inducing a controlled reaction and thus removing superficial layers of the skin. As a result, chemical peels promote the growth of a new healthy top skin layer and can improve many different skin concerns. The customizing of the peel will allow your Aesthetician to go over with you the particular benefits for your individual skin.

Frequently asked questions about chemical peels

Individuals with darkly pigmented skin should be very cautious about having chemical peels. This is because there is a significant chance that the pigmentation of the newly healed skin will be substantially different from their current skin color.

Chemical peels are safe for most patients and although rare, the risks, side effects, and complications of chemical peels include scarring, infection, reactivation of herpes simplex infections, and a substantial contrast in coloration of the treated skin. All patients will have a recuperation period, the length of which depends upon the type of peel used. Your esthetician will discus which one is right for you.

People who get cold sores (herpes simplex infections) should start on antiviral medications like acyclovir (Zovirax) one week prior to treatment and continue taking these for two weeks after therapy to prevent reactivation of cold sores. All patients should be encouraged to use high SPF sunscreens prior to and after peeling.

The state of your skin after a peel depends on the type of chemical used and your skin type. Superficial peels have limited effects. Medium peels may cause some redness and sensitivity. Medium to Deep peels usually require down time of 7-10 days.

A. Light Peels- The light peel takes approximately three to five days to complete the shedding process. No downtime required.
B. Medium Peels- Medium peels usually persist for five to seven days. The skin may or may not flake and fall away. AHAs can produce some redness with little or no flaking, depending on the individual.
